What should we wear!?
It is one of the questions that I am asked most often by families who are planning photo sessions together. Families should prepare clothing that is fun and fresh and represents their personal style. I suggest that families avoid the stress of finding clothing last-minute by planning ahead. In this post I aim to give some helpful do and don’t tips to help you create a cohesive look for your next shoot!
DO turn to the internet to get inspiration for your look. There are so many resources. Google “family portrait color schemes” and get started!
DON’T feel like you have to wear exactly the same outfit. I suggest coordinating instead of matching to give your images a feeling of togetherness without looking forced.
DO choose a color scheme that you like and then select clothing and accessories that tie everyone together within that color palette.
DON’T choose clothing that will act as camouflage in your surroundings, for example green shirts and brown pants in the park.
DO choose clothing that fits well and hides things like bra straps from sight during your session.
DON’T wear items that have large logos or graphics on them as they are distracting in portraits. This is especially important for men and kids who tend to wear clothing with large brands or characters on them.
DO pay attention to shoes if you plan to wear them during your session! Your shoes will be in some shots and if they are neon yellow that is a problem!
DON’T spend a lot if you don’t want to break the bank and don’t stress if you can’t! Beautiful looks can be created on a budget and often simpler is better in photography.
DO wait until just before your session to get your kids ready to avoid last minute spills. Also, remember little details such as diaper covers and socks that can make a big difference in the look of your images.
DON’T select clothing items that make you uncomfortable. You want to feel good in your clothing to achieve natural shots.
DO have fun piecing together your look and reach out to me if you need help!
When families are well-styled for their session the resulting images are timeless and classy.
If you have a question post it below and I will help you to make the most of your family photo session by selecting the perfect look!
